Aichel grew up and lives in what she refers to as a “machista” society in Habana, Cuba; a place where the words women and empowerment are rarely used in the same sentence.

 

Aichel is one of a few women artists in Cuba who has gained recognition and respect among her male peers. It is not surprising that Aichel’s “Women” series depicts confident women who are beautiful, elegant and fashionable; traits that resonate with one of Aichel’s favorite women entrepreneurs who grew up from rags to riches, Coco Chanel.

 

The black and white hues incorporated in Aichel’s work were Chanel’s favorite colors.
