CARLOS TORANZO
Toranzo, a well respected Cuban artist, grew up surrounded by political upheaval. He has spent the past 20 years of his career using cars as the focal point of his mixed media works. His art expresses both the historical challenges of Castro’s rule as well as the unendingly resolute nature of the Cuban people.
After the Cuban revolution, the Government passed legislation that severely restricted the acquisition of cars with the exception that any car acquired before 1959 could be passed down through the family. The cars Toranzo highlights are a historical marker; it is Cuban ingenuity that keeps them running. Just as the dedication these cars require, the works reflect the unyielding spirit and determination the country’s people posses as they fight to overcome Cuba’s challenges.
